10 Most Ridiculous Rom-Com Premises In Cinema History

10. Heartbreaker €“ Professional Seducer Falls In Love With Mark

I'll ease you in with a rom-com that's actually remotely plausible and that's the cult French gem Heartbreaker, which revolves around suave, extremely handsome Alex (Romain Duris), who is the head of a business where they are paid by a third party (often a friend or relative) to break a woman up from her partner. Their one moral imperative is that the woman must be unhappy, but simply not know it. From here, Alex and his crack team of co-ordinators will make the woman fall for Alex's easy charm, at which point Alex will break it off with the woman and allow them to seek out a man who makes them feel much the same way. It's a hilarious film, and one that thankfully draws attention to its lunacy rather than working in spite of it. Still, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Firstly, isn't there the possibility that these women will spend the rest of their lives searching for a man like Alex, but find no comparison, given how he is essentially a one in a million-type catch? Furthermore, Alex ends up falling for the woman he has been "working" the entire film, Juliette (Vanessa Paradis), as we sit back and have to apparently applaud these two while Juliette's husband (Andrew Lincoln), a perfectly nice yet quite boring guy, is left jilted at the altar (though does rebound in the credits with Juliette's friend Sophie). Great fun perhaps, but it also requires a pretty firm suspension of disbelief. Thankfully the film is so free-wheeling it's easy enough to do that.
