10 Ridiculously Overrated Foreign Films

9. Ichi The Killer

By a measure, Takashi Miiike's ultraviolent Ichi the Killer is the eclectic director's most famous film, a blood-stained revenge thriller that, as you can see above, doesn't skimp on the gore. It's a massively controversial and popular film, taking the extreme violence of its manga source material and transposing it onto another medium, such that the film ended up being banned in numerous countries. However, is it really worthy of such hubbub? Watching Ichi the Killer is an immensely underwhelming experience; while it's got a pulpy storyline that befits its reputation, the film really disappoints in the violence department; Miiike too often resorts to terrible CGI gore, which is thoroughly unconvincing when faced with practical counterparts. As a result, any attempt the film makes to be visceral is essentially a failure. Who said all overrated foreign films have to be classy? Ichi the Killer shows pulp can be regarded just as similarly.
