10 Scrapped Horror Movie Sequels Much Better Than What We Got

9. Scream 3

When Kevin Williamson sold Scream to Dimension Films, he intended the series to be a trilogy that would've ended in grand fashion. However, when Scream 3 came out it ended with more of a whimper than a bang. But that wouldn't always have been the case.

The original idea for the film dealt with Stu Macher surviving his brush with death and being sent to prison. While there he amasses a teenage fan base more than willing to help him coordinate revenge against Sydney Prescott who had foiled him years before.

However, six weeks before the planned start of filming, the Columbine High School massacre changed the landscape of entertainment and Dimension realized it. Believing it poor taste to release a film dealing with dead teenagers at this time, a complete rewrite of the script was ordered to switch the film’s focus toward adult characters while toning down the violence.

But this decision created problems. Kevin Williamson was unavailable to work on the script, star Neve Campbell could only return for a limited amount of time due to working on another movie, and as locations could not be secured most of the film had to be set on Dimension’s own back lot.

While Williamson's original idea would morph into the TV series The Following years later, one can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if Scream 3 had been allowed to continue on with its original script.
