10 Smutty Movies Which Somehow Got Rated PG In The 1980s

10. Overboard (1987)

In terms of plot, there's nothing too family-unfriendly about this amiable rom-com, in which selfish and lazy millionairess Goldie Hawn accidentally falls from her luxury yacht and washes ashore with no memory, only to be picked up by Kurt Russell's common-as-muck carpenter - whom she had not long since refused to pay for his work on her closet - who pretends to be her husband, and plunges her into a nightmare of domestic servitude. Of course this devious revenge plot gradually metamorphoses into a romance, our characters learn a great many moral lessons, and true love prevails - hurrah. But even if the ultimate message may be fairly wholesome, there's a fair amount of naughtiness along the way. There's no nudity, although with Hawn's bum-baring swimsuit above it certainly comes close - but Overboard really pushes the PG boundaries with its numerous sexual references. Russell makes up umpteen stories to Hawn about the variety of sex they used to have, whilst his buddy Billy (Mike Hagerty) similarly fabricates a liason with a phone sex girl. Most likely to raise eyebrows, however, is that most 80s of cinematic devices: foul-mouthed children. Who can imagine a PG film today in which a pre-teen child loudly declares of his stepmother, "she might have no tits but she has a nice ass!"
