I like a film that makes me think and solemn movies do that for me. The more solemn the movie, the more pleasure I derive from it. There are two directors who are well represented on this list - Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman. These two directors knew how to make solemn movies, sometimes without even the merest sprinkling of joy or happiness. I do not apologise for including several of their films in this list because both men were Masters of solemn cinema.
