10 Things Every Harry Potter Fan Wishes Were In The Movies
Peeves the Poltergeist is one of the most entertaining characters in the books. A constant annoyance for everyone at Hogwarts, his love of mischief outweighed even that of Fred and George. His tunes were catchy and his pranks were ridiculous, but we never got to see the troublemaker on the big screen.
If nothing else, fans would have loved to see Peeves torture Dolores Umbridge throughout Order of the Phoenix. After Fred and George fled the school, they tasked Peeves with carrying out the duties of mischief at Hogwarts. "Give her hell from us, Peeves" they said to him before they left, which led him to dump tarantulas in the Great Hall, lock up Mrs. Norris, and even develop a friendship with Professor McGonagall, who hated Umbridge just as much as anyone else. And it's fun to imagine his "Voldy's gone moldy" tune at the end of Deathly Hallows Part 2 playing out as a great touch of comedy after the brutal battle.
The character was actually intended to be in the Sorcerer's Stone. He was played by the late comedian Rik Mayall, but was ultimately cut from the film because he was deemed "inconsequential to the plot." Um, what?
In eight movies, there was no room to show this beloved character because they didn't think he drove the plot forward? Mayall apparently didn't mind because he wasn't a fan of the movie anyway. In fact, he said "with respect… no, with no respect at all… the film was s**t".
Seems... petty? But he still got paid for the role, so you could say it all worked out for him in the end. As for the fans, they still want their Poltergeist.
