10 Things You Didn’t Know About Benedict Cumberbatch

8. His Parents Didn€™t Want Him To Be An Actor

Assuming you€™ve seen Sherlock (and if you haven€™t, you really should), you might remember the time when Watson returns to 221B Baker Street to find his partner barely listening to a man and a woman before unceremoniously ushering them out the door. Watson naturally assumed them to be clients, only to discover he had just briefly encountered Sherlock€™s parents. Who, of course, were played by Benedict Cumberbatch€™s folks €“ Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. Carlton has enjoyed a distinguished career in the theatre and starred in numerous television shows over the decades, while Ventham also achieved notable success that has included appearances in several Carry On movies and recurring roles in Heartbeat, Doctor Who and Only Fools and Horses. Nevertheless, they were both well aware of the transience and precarious nature of a life in showbiz and provided their son with the best education available in an attempt to steer him into a €œproper job€, encouraging him to become a barrister. Needless to say, they were eventually persuaded otherwise, and when his father witnessed Benedict€™s performance in Glengarry Glen Ross at university, he told his son: €œYou are better than I ever was or will be and you can make a living at this.€ Cumberbatch never looked back, and hopefully we will get to enjoy his performances for many years to come.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
