10 Times Requiem For A Dream Scared The Hell Out Of You
Celebrating fifteen years of WTF.
If there was ever a film made that taught you addiction is bad, 2000 psychological drama Requiem For A Dream is surely it. While the film is a masterpiece portraying some of American society's more desperate individuals, it's also an ordeal, with several scenes leaving scars that endure long after it finishes. Between Jared Letos gangrenous arm and Jennifer Connellys infamous sex show scene, there are images that burn their way onto the back of your brain and stay there. Add the appropriately pounding score by Clint Mansell and you have one of the most vile, yet engrossing, movies to ever tackle the subject of addiction. It's ok to be frightened by movies; isn't that why everyone watches scary films anyway? The thrill of the psychological, and the intensity of depraved behaviour make for an entertaining watch. And yet Requiem seems to get under your skin from the very beginning, making it a timeless movie in that it's not relevant to one particular time period. There are moments in Requiem that you never quite recovered from; and don't worry, you're not the only one with a life long paranoid fear of diet pills. To celebrate the film's official 15th birthday (it screened in Cannes on May 14th 2000), let's take a trip down trippy lane to celebrate those moments again...
