10 Underrated Movies That Were Probably Masterpieces

sunshine-danny-boyle There are so many films that come out every year that it's impossible to believe that every one of them will get the recognition they deserve, but some of them are un-fairly ignored by audiences and awards shows alike. This is incredibly unfair to the filmmakers themselves, but also to movie lovers like all of you reading this article. There is a whole world of exciting and interesting movies out there and I want to illuminate that a little with this list. For whatever reason the 10 films that I've come up with here were plain disregarded as the masterpieces (or near masterpieces) that they are. Every entry on this list deserves to be much more highly regarded than it is and easily deserves your viewing time...

10. The Turin Horse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kawX46GHKYk The final film by Bela Tarr and one of the best foreign films that I've personally ever seen. The story is very simple since it only concerns a couple of characters and basically just has them do mundane activities for the majority of the running time. Tarr makes the tedium of the film look more beautiful than any CGI laden blockbuster with his brilliant use of black and white photography. The way he is able to capture the reality of life is the film's greatest strength. It sounds odd but the reason it's so compelling is because it's a very boring film. There is little dialogue but you still feel like you know the characters and when the ending comes you may find yourself more attached to them than you had realized. While The Turin Horse is by no means light viewing it is worth every minute it takes to watch it.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
