10 Underrated Recent Movies That Deserve A Second Chance

9. Godzilla

Despite all the concerns raised over Star Wars: Rogue One - the extensive reshoots, reports of an edit suite takeover and Disney's open lowering of expectations - one that hadn't really come up is the suitability of Gareth Edwards as director. This not only shows people have bought his fan credentials, but that the tepid response to Godzilla hasn't hurt his stock.

This is pretty surprising given how people acted in 2014, and suggests that public opinion is already starting to shift on the director's incredibly successful reboot of the Kaiju franchise. The main problems raised at the time was the lack of Godzilla in the first two acts of a movie bearing his name. Sure, none of the characters were as interesting as Bryan Cranston, who was killed off shockingly early, but it's classic tension building, and the payoff, when the monster punches are finally thrown, is astounding. Edwards' wide-lensed San Francisco showdown is one of the best finales of recent years, a jaw-dropping show of real monster carnage.

With the series set for the big time - a Kong (Skull Island vintage) showdown is on the cards - it's entirely possible this film will retrocatively become Legendary's monstrous Iron Man, a solid film boosted by context.
