10 Upcoming Movies That Could Bomb At The Box Office

The studios better be ready to cover these losses.

The box office is a tricky way of measuring a film's success. With home streaming and VoD purchases an increasingly popular choice in today's age, the amount of money a film makes in its theatrical run isn't necessarily the best way to judge whether it's a success or failure.

There are an incredible amount of factors at play now. With sequels and adaptations in the works for years, sometimes before its predecessor has even come out, buzz can come and go in an instant.

Critical reviews and audience responses can be incredibly flippant ways of assessing excitement, presales are a case-by-case indication of success, and the competition of the market as release dates change constantly can take away a film's opportunity for a killer opening weekend.

But with a large amount of expensive movies failing to make back their production and marketing budgets (as a general rule of thumb, a film must make back double its production budget to break even, though this changes based on the type of marketing push a film receives), looking at the upcoming slate of 2019 movies and beyond can reveal a few concerns over some of the biggest titles.

Disney and Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Eoin Colfer's book series released between 2001 and 2012 has been in the works officially since 2013 and was initially slated for a 2019 release before being pushed back to May 2020.

Being a large live-action Disney adaptation of a famous property, it's likely the production budget on this thing is fairly high and will receive an equally expensive marketing push.

But looking back at other recent big budget Disney kid-oriented endeavours (for example, 2018's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which was made for a hefty $130 million and only made $174 million worldwide), questions can be raised over this film's success.

The film was also in development hell for ten years when plans to adapt the book were initially proposed in 2001. The project has seen several iterations of writers, directors and stars, and now with a largely unknown cast and a book series long past its prime to capitalise on, this could be a box office disaster waiting to happen.

Chances are I’m watching a movie or replaying Mass Effect rather than doing anything productive.
