10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 2010s

Like turds in the wind...

Comic book superhero films have had a varied history. Throughout the 60s and 70s they were a very niche market, they found their footing in the 80s with Superman and Batman at the forefront, the 90s all but killed the superhero sub-genre with Superman IV and Batman & Robin at the forefront, and in the 2000s they were reworked in darker, more realistic tones. They were still few and far between but the potential was there.

This decade was when the superhero film exploded into unheard-of levels of popularity. Suddenly Marvel and DC were the hottest brands in cinema, to the point where everyone had to copy what they did to try and get that sweet, sweet dollar. Everyone had to be dark and gritty like Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. Everyone had to set up countless sequels and a shared universe like The Avengers.

Needless to say, these approaches had varying levels of success. Some worked, others didn’t. This is a study of the latter, the superheroes who failed to convince us that a man could fly, who didn’t live by great responsibility coming with great power, or who simply just made a bad movie. And some of these are really bad!

In a decade that brought us such classics as Wonder Woman, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan and almost everything from the MCU, it’s also brought us the following flops.

10. Justice League (2017)

Suicide Squad Joker
Warner Bros.

This is just a bit sad this one, hence why I’m giving it a little slack. That said though, it’s still not a good film.

Justice League is what happens when two very talented and very different directors are given the helm of the same film. Zack Snyder was due to give us his answer to the Avengers with DC’s biggest heroes but had to pull out during production due to the death of his daughter. Therefore, Avengers director Joss Weedon was brought in to pick up the pieces, while also putting his own mismatched pieces in places they don’t belong, and thus creating the most baffling jigsaw puzzle of the decade.

The fact the film was made before establishing the majority of its characters was confusing enough, but with all the trouble this film went through behind the scenes as well as following on from the death of Superman (we’ll get to that...) saw something only barely watchable as it saw the heroes fighting generic CG villain Stephenwolf in his oh-so boring quest of revenge by finding the Motherboxes.

No-one on screen is invested (Batfleck looks particularly bored), we don’t care about the majority of these characters because we don’t know them, it’s an overly computer generated mess that looks like something from 10 years ago, and need we mention Superman’s incredibly distracting lip-job.
