The Awful Director: Ah, Paul W.S. Anderson, not to be confused with the good one (Paul Thomas Anderson).

Anderson has made a career out of directing commercially successful but critically reviled trash, such as Mortal Kombat, four of the six Resident Evil movies, Alien vs. Predator and Death Race, as well as all-out duds Soldier, The Three Musketeers and Pompeii.

The One Great Movie: Though Anderson doesn't have a single critically fresh film to his name, his 1997 sci-fi horror Event Horizon has endured as something of an underrated cult classic, touting the most cerebral premise and sharpest execution of the director's entire body of work (saying little though it is).

It says a lot that there are countless retrospective articles online championing the movie as a criminally under-appreciated (if undeniably flawed) genre classic.
