Currently in "phase 2" of the project, the Marvel cinematic universe is one of the most successful movie franchises in film history. Eight films down the line, the franchise has grossed a multi-billion dollar haul and, with four confirmed movies still to come in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man (and numerous unconfirmed offerings in the pipeline), the success is set to continue. Phase 3's only confirmed movie, at this moment in time is Ant-Man, with Paul Rudd set to star as the titular character, but we can safely expect a second Avengers sequel based on the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, a Doctor Strange movie, a Black Panther movie, a third Thor movie and, quite possibly, a fourth instalment of the Iron Man franchise and a third Captain America movie. Beyond that, who knows? The Marvel cinematic universe might not even go beyond phase 3 but, if it does, the possibilities for expansion are nearly endless. Marvel's comic book history is rich with epic stories and characters - many of which link in fairly seamlessly with the existing and upcoming stories and characters in the Marvel cinematic universe - so the potential for some truly epic movies to keep the Marvel flag flying in Hollywood for many years to come is definitely there.
