11 Real Star Wars Locations You Must Visit

2. Hotel Sidi Driss (Tunisia)

Other than the Death Star, Tatooine is arguably the most recognised location in Episode IV.

North of Tataouine (we see what Lucas did there) is Hotel Sidi Driss in Matmata, a nomadic dingy-looking cave dwelling without room service or a trouser-press.

But none of that matters... This is Luke Skywalker's teenage home.

Exterior shots of the Lars residence featured in A New Hope were filmed inside a Tunisian hotel whose tourist numbers have rocketed over the past 30 years. A lot of the archeology remains the same and some of the original casings and props remain on the walls.

You don't have to be a guest of the hotel to eat there as tours often allow you to eat at the restaurant which means you can sit cross-legged and eat couscous in the dining room.

There's even a little shop selling ice-creams although you might have to ask nicely for blue milk.

Hotel Sidi Driss is underground which means it isn't domed so extra scenes were filmed elsewhere. To find the outside of the Lars homestead (which was restored in 2012) head south towards the salt flats of Nefta and remember to take your droid with you.
