10. Story Of Your Life
Taking a more thoughtful approach to the alien invasion story, Story Of Your Life follows Amy Adamss Dr. Louise Banks as shes brought in to determine if a race of newly-arrived aliens is a threat. Using her linguistic skills, she begins to communicate with them and starts suffering from a series of cryptic flashbacks. While the story by itself sounds promising, this is again a case of the people involved giving it the potential to be great. Coming off of Sicario, it seems like director Denis Villeneuve can do no wrong. To make things better, in addition to Adams, hes enlisted Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker to star in the adaptation. This doesnt sound like its going to be a film for the masses, but it undeniably has the potential to strike a chord with a select few. While expansive epics like The Force Awakens are exciting, a film like Ex Machina proved that grounded character drama absolutely has a place in the genre of science-fiction.
