11 Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies That Could Be Better Than Star Wars: The Force Awakens

6. Midnight Special

Jeff Nichols is one of the most underrated directors working today. He was behind the incredible Mud and the enigmatic Take Shelter, and now he€™s trying his hand at science-fiction. Midnight Special is his first studio production so expect his stellar character work to come through amidst an even more sprawling backdrop than he's delivered before. The story follows Michael Shannon€™s Roy as he races across the country to get his son to a safe location. The catch: his son has superpowers. With help from Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst, he has to evade religious zealots and government agents who want his son for their own purposes. The trailer may not have sold everyone on this film but there€™s still a lot of excitement for its release. While Star Wars finds it strength in exploring the fantastic, the harsh truths of the real world interacting with things it doesn't understand can provide a much more compelling story, especially when in the hands of such a capable director. Even without any excessive fanfare, Midnight Special already looks poised to be one of the best films of next year, and is absolutely something to keep an eye on.
