11 Ways Star Wars: The Last Jedi Was Basically The Empire Strikes Back

10. Bacta Is Used On A Hero At The Beginning

Bacta, the watery substance that Wookiepedia tells us helps the body to regrow tissue of almost all kinds, is first seen on-screen in the early stages of The Empire Strikes Back. Luke is injured by the wampa and spends an undisclosed amount of time floating in a huge vat of the stuff. Despite his injuries, he emerges pretty much fine.

Similarly, one of the new generation of Star Wars icons - in this case Finn - finds himself dependent on the medical miracle mixture in the opening stages of The Last Jedi. He had been slashed in the back by Kylo Ren's lightsabre and looked to be in a true life-and-death situation when The Force Awakens closed. In one of many moments which seemed to indicate that Rian Johnson was anxious to avoid being handcuffed to the previous installment, Finn emerged quickly and with perhaps even more of a spring in his step than Luke did.

This may not be the biggest parallel between the two films, but it is certainly there: two young male Star Wars heroes needing Bacta at the same point in the two movies.
