Blade Runner 2049 is that rarest of movies: a sequel released 35 years after the original that not only lived up to its immense cult fandom and inestimable legacy, but arguably bettered what came before.

There was much talk pre-release of Columbia attempting to transform Blade Runner into a franchise with this movie, but Denis Villeneuve's poetic, deliberately-paced end product seems to thoroughly thumb its nose up at the prospect of a third movie.

It's just as well, because Villeneuve did such a masterful job with this film that it's hard to imagine him or another director finding a way to bottle lightning twice in a row. Let the "franchise" end with two glorious movies to its name, the latter of which gives fans some satisfying closure for Deckard's arc.

How Likely Is It?: Thankfully, the film's disappointing box office has annihilated all sequel talks for the foreseeable future, and while we could theoretically end up with Blade Runner 2079 in another three decades, it's incredibly unlikely given the series' clear lack of financial viability. 2/10
