So bad they're good.

2016 wasn't the greatest year for movies, most film fans will admit that, but at least amid the disappointments and straight-up dumpster fire flicks you'd never want to see again, there were some movies that entertained in spite of their objective awfulness.

Few will profess that these 12 films are good on any serious filmmaking level, but either driven by a terrific cast, some unexpected charm or a straight-up so-awful-it's-amazing tone, these films found a legion of fans who were well aware they weren't any good, but enjoyed them regardless.

These are the sorts of movies you'll watch with a few buddies and a few beers, or won't bother reaching for the remote to turn off if they appear on TV. They're enjoyable nonsense and sometimes that's all a film needs to be: not everything needs to be a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

Here are the 12 biggest guilty pleasure movies of 2016...

12. Now You See Me 2

Inferno Tom Hanks Felicity Jones
Summit Entertainment

By any regular metric, this sequel to 2013's magic-themed heist thriller is not a good film. It's absurdly plotted, it's at least half an hour too long, and it rarely justifies its own existence as a sequel or otherwise.

It's also an indecent amount of fun thanks to a committed cast, with new additions Daniel Radcliffe and Lizzy Caplan bringing even more charm to the line-up.

The plot is forgettable and the various twists and turns are increasingly ridiculous, but if you accept the film for what it is and just embrace all that silliness, there's an infectiously entertaining quality to it.

If you're honest with yourself, you'll probably watch the inevitable sequel regardless, maybe even in the cinema. Going by those oddly impressive box office numbers, a lot of people did, and they can't all think it's legit good, right?
