12 Dumbest Movie Plot Twists Of 2017

11. The Major Really Is Japanese After All - Ghost In The Shell

The Twist: In the film's third act, it's revealed that Major Mira Killian (Scarlett Johansson) is actually a Japanese woman named Motoko Kusanagi, whose memory was wiped and her brain placed inside this very Caucasian-looking shell.

Mira/Motoko actually meets her mother late in the movie, and in the film's closing moments, has a very, very weird reunion with her at Motoko's grave.

Why It's Dumb: This was basically an attempt by the movie to "own" its controversial white-washing, whereby Paramount refused to simply cast a Japanese actress as Motoko and hired a popular white actress instead.

In a way it's almost admirable that the movie was this self-aware, but some fans have also felt that it was a smug way to try and defend against criticism, with the ending basically screaming, "See! She was Japanese all along! But we still 'need' a white face for our big-budget movie, so screw you!"

It wants to have its cake and eat it too, but fans were naturally infuriated by the unintentionally comical if not downright insulting nature of the big reveal.
