It seems that the dead and the demonic really aren’t into paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (possibly because they’ve been thwarting their haunting-related high jinks for decades) because when director James Wan decided to bring their investigations to the big screen in 2013’s The Conjuring, a whole host of weird things befell cast and crew.

Based on the Warrens’ 1971 investigation of a family whose Rhode Island house was supposedly haunted by a witch, The Conjuring’s star Vera Farmiga (Lorraine Warren) was so unnerved throughout filming that she refused to bring script home with her. She later reported finding three mysterious claw marks on her laptop.

A random fire also broke out at the hotel cast and crew were staying at and Wan’s pet puppy reportedly starting growling at thin air one night while the director was working on the script, while phone calls with the real-life Lorraine Warren would be staticky and frequently cut out.

Its sequel, aptly titled The Conjuring 2, didn’t fare much better either despite a priest blessing the set. Filmed on a haunted soundstage at Warner Brothers’ Burbank Studios (which probably wasn’t the brightest idea, all things considered), the crew reported heavy curtains moving randomly by themselves while the sounds of disembodied drilling and hammering could be heard coming from underneath the stage.
