We're now deep in the thick of awards season, as critics groups have begun to unveil their favourite films and performances of 2015, all ahead of the big one that is the 88th Academy Awards on February 28, 2016. That's not saying that these 12 movies were tailor-made for Oscars, but they're clearly eager to be participants in the race, either tackling a prevalent social issue or being so jam-packed with Oscar-winning talent that they couldn't not be in contention. The focal question, then, is whether these movies can live up to all the hype. Are they going to steamroll their way to the winners' podium, or are they destined to be another example of the widely-maligned "Oscar bait" that's forgotten soon after release? And no, despite The Hateful Eight being about as likely to win an Oscar or two as any movie on this list, it wasn't included because there's not a huge indication that Tarantino cares about Oscars or writes and directs with them in mind. He's either doing his own thing, or doing a fantastic job of pretending that he is. These movies want the golden glory so badly, and you can smell it in their pores and DNA.
