12 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About Star Wars: The Last Jedi

2. Benicio Del Toro Was Totally Wasted

The brilliant Benicio del Toro appears in The Last Jedi as codebreaker DJ, but let's be honest, he was totally wasted in a role like this.

Considering that del Toro was initially believed to be the film's antagonist, it's surprising that his role is actually so small and unassuming in the final film.

From the sheer contrived nature of Finn and Rose being locked away with just the codebreaker they need, despite the code apparently being extremely rarefied, to his weird stutter and eventual selling the pair out, it's some of the most ho-hum storytelling and character work in the entire movie.

Del Toro certainly didn't turn in a bad performance, but he would've been capable of so much more with a better script. Instead, his role was a bit of a shoulder shrug, and it doesn't help that he appears in unarguably the most disposable sequence of the entire movie.
