Why It's Doomed: When The New Mutants was first announced as a horror-themed spin-off to the X-Men franchise, fans were pretty excited, especially given the talented cast and crew involved.

Then the first trailer dropped and suggested a more generic and safe film than people were hoping for, dampening enthusiasm significantly.

But that was just the beginning of the movie's troubles, as a series of delays pushed its release date from April 13 of this year all the way to next August.

Reports soon emerged of a stressful shoot for director Josh Boone, who Fox had micro-managed throughout production in the hope of steering the movie away from strictly being a horror film.

After the middling trailer posted strong social media engagements, though, Fox relented and allowed Boone to carry out extensive re-shoots to fully realise his initial horror-centric vision.

And while it wouldn't be the first time that re-shoots actually improved a movie, it's nevertheless incredibly difficult to be optimistic about the end result with it languishing for so long in post-production.

And let's be honest, would it surprise anyone if the film just forewent a theatrical release entirely and ended up dumped on Disney's new streaming service Disney+?
