Though the idea of introducing more spin-off properties into the X-Men franchise is very much welcome, it's fair to say that the general fan response to the first trailer for The New Mutants was "mixed" to say the least.

While adapting the New Mutants to the big screen makes a lot of sense, and the cast certainly doesn't want for talent, that first trailer makes it clear that the film's going to lean heavily on its supernatural horror elements, which unfortunately seem rather cliched and played-out.

Take away the X-Men branding and, so far, this could pass for any forgettable horror flick dumped in January or February. While Fox could simply be playing-up the film's more generic elements in order to pull in the casual teen crowd, the PG-13 rating doesn't help convince that this will be a truly horrifying or visceral cinematic experience.
