13 Actors You Didn't Know Almost Played The Joker

9. Tim Curry

Now, here's for something a little different. Tim Curry was originally cast to voice The Joker in Batman: the Animated Series, but he was replaced with Star Wars' Mark Hamill, as Curry's voice was deemed to be too terrifying and far away from the traditional vocal rendition of the character. Would It Have Worked?: Well, Curry is well-known for playing arguably the scariest clown in the history of pop culture: Pennywise from the TV movie adaptation of Stephen King's It. Though the movie was hit-and-miss, Curry received high acclaim for his part, totally unrecognisable decked out in clown make-up, even if live-action and voice-over roles are of course completely different. Curry would have no doubt made for a compelling, terrifying Joker, though given how much Hamill has made the role his own over the years in both cartoons and video games, it's difficult to see how Curry could have managed to top him.
