There are plenty of directors who tend to stick to the same small set of genres over and over again, and there's certainly nothing shameful about working with what you know.

However, there are also those filmmakers who have boldly ventured outside their comfort zones and dared to work in a litany of movie genres, proving how a skilled enough director can succeed at making just about any type of film.

Though these directors, both still working and sadly no longer with us, typically have their favourite genres to work in, they've also proven their incredible versatility time and time again by daring to surprise audiences with game stabs at different types of movie, be they unexpected musicals, shocking forays into the comic book genre, or maybe even a video game adaptation or two.

While these revered artists may not serve up home runs every time they go to bat (though some of them in fact almost do), it's hard not to admire their desire to work so frequently outside the box. At least you know that every time they release a new movie (if they're still around), it's going to be something interesting to behold...
