13 Most Ridiculously Over-Powered Comic Book Movie Characters

Just a snap and it all comes down?

Avengers Infinity War Thanos
Marvel Studios

When you're writing superheroes, you're bound to come up against a fairly big obstacle when trying to make them relatable: they're just not vulnerable enough to really appeal to human audiences. That's why so many film-makers have employed narrative strategies to weaken their characters in the interest of drama, or depower them entirely to raise the stakes.

We've already had endless deconstructions of heroes designed to bring them down to our level before their powers make them exceptional ideals we can all aspire to be. But at the same time, nobody wants to see a superhero who is neither super nor a hero, so it's important that there's SOME commitment to making them extraordinary.

Unfortuntely, sometimes (at least partly thanks to the source material, in some cases), film-makers get a little over-enthusiastic and we end up with characters whose powers are a little ridiculous. There's super and then there's just plain silly...

13. Hulk

Hulk Movie
Marvel

Hulk is what's known as a tank in battle terms: he's designed to be stronger, more durable and a game changer. He's like drafting in the heavy artillery when you need to sweep a lot of enemies away.

Obviously, Marvel have done well to give Banner and Hulk some actual story to go along with the huge power-set, but there's no getting around the fact that he's still essentially just a special weapon. That's why it's so key he steps back up in Avengers 4.

Most Over-Powered Moment

Punching a Chitauri flying woodlouse beast out of the sky and killing it was a pretty big one. And while he was beaten up, going toe to toe with Thanos for a while was also hugely impressive.

Any Weaknesses?

His own mind. Adding in the conflict between Hulk and Bruce Banner - driven by the latter's fears of being a danger to Earth and his friends - was a great way to add complexity.
