It's almost that time of the year again, where movie studios start trotting out their biggest and most expensive movies for insatiable audiences to gorge on over the course of the "summer" (which, as far as studios are concerned, starts in spring these days).

However, if you do nothing but watch CGI-fuelled explosion-fests this summer, you're probably going to end up exhausted and irritated. You'll occasionally need something a little different, something smarter, more cerebral, or simply more artistically-minded.

These 14 films, from acclaimed festival horror flicks, to promising new dramas from beloved auteurs and everything in-between, are all releasing over the summer period - which we're classifying as from April to September - and should provide much-needed respite from all that big-budget silliness.

Most of us love some good old-fashioned, A-list escapism, and with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Incredibles 2, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and many more sure to deliver that in spades, you certainly won't be left wanting.

But if you want to really switch your brain on and engage with some actual, honest-to-God characters and see something truly unique, you might also want to seek these movies out...
