14 Excruciatingly Gory Movie Fight Scenes To Make You Squirm

14. Raging Bull

Grim Highlight: Close-up of Robert De Niro's face getting dismantled Jake LaMotta's bout against Sugar Ray Leonard did not go the way he wanted it to. When the bell for round 13 rings, LaMotta is in serious trouble as Sugar Ray immediately lands several punches to the title character's face. Nonetheless, LaMotta emphasises his bravado and tells Ray to keep going. After a few seconds of anticipation, Ray unleashes a bevy of blows on LaMotta, each one resulting in a spray of sweat and blood off of Jake's body. The scene is, of course, beautifully directed by Scorsese and thus it has a certain artistry and style to it that is absent in most schlocky scenes of gratuitous violence, but this only serves to underline the brutality on display. At the end of the fight, after being thoroughly pummelled and with a broken face, LaMotta tells Ray, "You never got me down." His ability to withstand a world of pain aside, LaMotta is no superhero, but what ends up defining him in this scene and in the movie is his unending drive.
