14 Star Wars Original Trilogy Easter Eggs You Need To See

8. Potato Asteroid

The asteroid field in The Empire Strikes Back is rather inaccurate. In reality the rocks would never be that close, with the odds of successful navigation actually much higher. Oh, and there's no potatoes in real asteroid belts; it's nigh on impossible to tell, but according to the effects designers at least one of the asteroids in the background of the sequence is just an ordinary, Earth-grown potato.

The veracity of this claim has come under fire in recent years, with multiple websites reproducing the above image and stating the asteroid to the left is a potato and the one near the camera is a shoe. It only takes a second glance to tell that's not true.

What's happened is that, in an internet version of Chinese whispers, one source theorised this and many more accepted it as fact without verification. While it's not in that image, there is definitely a potato in amongst the asteroids. Somewhere.

There was a little nod to this easter egg in the prequels; one of the asteroids in the Geonosis rings is actually a digitally expanded shaak (the cow-things Anakin rides on Naboo).
