15 Awesome Films Since 2000 You'll Never Watch Again

14. Macbeth

Michael Fassbender Shame
See-Saw Films

Plot:

A sparse and cinematic version of Macbeth with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the lead roles.

Why It's Awesome:

A raw, visually flawless and brutally intense vision that does Shakespeare proud, this rises on the strength of the bard's brilliant writing and fantastic work from director Justin Kurzel and Micheal Fassbender.

Why You'll Only Watch It Once:

Macbeth is not exactly a cheerful play; it is a tragedy after all. The stuff Macbeth and his wife do to everyone else, including innocent children, is highly disturbing and it doesn't end well for anyone in the story.

This retelling is faithful to the story and is just as miserable and gloomy, so it's not necessarily the most enjoyable film out there. This is the case with many adaptations of Shakespeare's tragedies, which are uniformly depressing, but this one is particularly heavy and will prove hard to watch for everyone.

The reason for this is that Macbeth is an exceptionally intense movie. Take the gruesome violence (including a boy having his throat slit in slow-motion and a family being burnt at the stake) and tragic story, combine it with the relentlessly bleak, scary and downcast visuals and performances and you've got a highly upsetting movie that really brings out the tragedy of the play in a way few other adaptations have ever done.

It's too grim to watch again and it's sparse presentation means there wouldn't be much to discover in another viewing as well.
