15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018
14. Searching
Although it's mostly been used as a base for horror movies, the movie-within-a-screen sub-genre is fast proving that it has the flexibility to present any kind of story in a unique - and incredibly modern - way. Searching was the film that put the proof in the pudding however, spinning a tight, emotional thriller about a father's search for his missing daughter almost entirely through laptop screens and webcams.
Like Unfriended before it, what sets Searching apart from similar movies of its ilk is authenticity. Directors aren't always the most savvy when it comes to depicting the internet - or even people using the internet - onscreen, as even a single goof can transform the whole thing into the "how do you do, fellow children?" meme from The Simpsons.
Searching doesn't succumb to this problem at all, and that pervasive sense of authenticity only heightens the already great drama and superbly compelling storytelling. Throw in killer performances from John Cho and Debra Messing, and you've got easily one of the best thrillers of the year.
