14. Staying Alive (1983)

Staying Alive John Travolta
Paramount Pictures

Because 1977's John Travola-starring Saturday Night Fever made more than 65x its budget at the box office, a sequel was always inevitable, finally materialising six years later with the Sylvester Stallone-directed (!) Staying Alive.

Widely regarded as one of the worst movie sequels of all time, largely for lacking the gritty authenticity of the original musical drama, Staying Alive is an absolutely fascinating film that remains extremely, perversely watchable four decades later (if perhaps for the wrong reasons).

Far from the dull rehash of a sequel you might expect from a 0%-scoring movie, Staying Alive is jam-packed with ridiculous montages, over-the-top dance numbers - especially the Satan's Alley finale - and a risible, oddly charmless Travola performance. It is a far weirder and more interesting sequel than it gets credit for, even if it absolutely besmirches the legacy of the classic original.
