As much as dazzling visuals can create unforgettable movie moments that leave audiences awe-struck, what would cinema be without music? Boring, that's what.

With precious few films able to mine suspense and emotion purely from silence alone, Hollywood typically turns to composers to elevate the on-screen drama to the next level. And while the film industry is full of journeyman composers delivering forgettable scores in at least equally forgettable movies, at their best, film scores can entirely re-shape how the audience emotionally processes a scene.

From earnest orchestral compositions to tongue-in-cheek satirical songs, envelope-pushing electronic tracks and the tune that's practically destined to win this year's Best Original Song Oscar, these are the 15 most evocative, emotional, memorable and instantly iconic movie songs of 2018...

Just barely edging out Tyler Bates' hysterical Juggernaut theme ("You Can’t Stop this Mother F*****") is this glorious James Bond-parodying ballad played over the downbeat opening titles sequence for Deadpool 2.

As if roping in the queen of the movie ballads herself, Celine Dion, wasn't awesome enough, Fox even commissioned an incredible music video loaded with all the high-camp and dramatic portent you could possibly want. And it ends with Dion mistaking the Merc with a Mouth for Spider-Man, too.

While "Ashes" sadly didn't earn an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song as many hoped, it's still one of 2018's most annoyingly catchy movie earworms.
