15 French Horror Films You Won't Forget In A Hurry

14. Livide (2011)

Livide Lucy is being trained as an in-house nurse by an older woman called Mrs. Wilson. Her first client is Mrs. Jessel, who is in a deep coma. Lucy learns that Mrs. Jessel used to be a dance school instructor and is in possession of a large amount of treasure. She gets her friends Ben and William to go and hunt out the treasure at night by breaking into Mrs. Jessel's house. However, things start going awry in the house as supernatural forces vent their fury. Expect lots of ballet and vampire related horror as Mrs. Jessel and her daughter Anna are not as dead as they appear to be. Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, Livide is apparently the follow up to Inside. An English-language version is naturally in the works. It has to be said that the film is a bit of a disappointment when compared to Inside, though they are totally different films. The film looks beautiful and does possess some genuinely frightening moments, but the plot - teens enter haunted house and are chased by malevolent forces - is a bit clichéd and the ending to the film is downright cheesy. Livide is very stylish but lacks the suspense and visceral horror that made Inside so compelling. Is the horror film world a better place for having Livide? I don't think so, actually.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
