This adaptation of E.L. James' infamous bestseller was a film no-one expected to be any good, but nevertheless it attracted a huge amount of attention and was a big hit. It didn't subvert any expectations by being a terrible film, but it will have disappointed many viewers for different reasons; they came for graphic sex and what they got was a passionless, surprisingly tame experience instead.

Then again, it wasn't quite the massive turkey most were expecting and turned out to be a two-star film. It was raised up thanks to Dakota Johnson's solid lead performance and Sam Taylor-Johnson's good direction, but it being a 4/10 rather than a 1/10 mustn't be misinterpreted as a recommendation.

Filled with terrible acting (Johnson aside) and horrendous dialogue, but entirely devoid of any narrative drive, dramatic storytelling or any actual action at all, this is more or less a 'Nothing' movie that'll send everyone to sleep.

Since it's adapted from such a notorious novel and is also unintentionally hilarious, it'll probably be remembered as a cult classic, but it's still an undeniably awful movie. Make no mistake, this is one of the worst global hits of the decade.
