It's frequently decried that originality is dead in Hollywood: everything's all about sequels, remakes and reboots, and arguably no genre suffers with this as much as horror. Dull, generic horrors truly are a dime a dozen, as are countless attempts to milk old classics for more money by remaking them for a new, totally unaware generation. However, as the occasional remake proves (like Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, for instance), they're not all bad, and some in fact serve up a fine alternate vision which stands perfectly well on its own. Rather than remake great movies which have aged exceedingly well, though, Hollywood could do itself a favour by tackling those "near miss" horror flicks, the ones that had a ton of promise but didn't quite hit their targets, or have simply aged badly. Most of the movies on this list are not classics on the level of The Exorcist for precisely this reason: these films all boast great premises ripe for a fine horror, but enjoying each of them involves accepting myriad filmmaking flaws. With contemporary effects and stronger scripts. these movies could all be remade to considerably greater success.
