15 Insane Shocks & Snubs From 2015 Oscar Nominations

Guardians of the Galaxy gets a little love...but epic snubs abound as well...

The 2015 Academy Award nominations dropped earlier today, and as per usual, they've proven controversial with film buffs the world over, astounded at the dreck that somehow got nominated and appalled at the films that were somehow passed over by Oscar. Overall, the Academy weren't particularly adventurous this year, nominating a lot of competent if hardly Oscar-worthy movies like The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything which nevertheless fit the Oscar mould perfectly. Lesser-known films with touch subject matter were inevitably snubbed at every corner, and as ever, the documentary and animation categories turned up a shocking couple of snubs each, though the technical categories did rustle up more than a few pleasant surprises, so it's all swings and roundabouts. All these nominations really make clear is that the Oscar ceremony next month is probably going to be relatively boring and predictable, with the (admittedly brilliant) Boyhood steamrolling its way to Best Picture, while the various acting awards already feel pretty much sewn up. So, it's time to comb through this year's nominees for the most egregious snubs and shocking nods, to examine where the Academy screwed up and where they did their institution a service.
