Oscar Wins: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 35%

Period dramas are catnip to the Academy's crafts categories, and so it's little surprise that Rob Marshall's mediocre epic drama took home three gold statues.

Indeed, it looks nice, but there's little more below the surface than a trite, syrupy soap opera melodrama, to say nothing of the film's widely-lambasted decision to hire Chinese actresses to play Japanese characters.

The costume design and art direction wins are justifiable enough, but should the cinematography really have beaten out Emmanuel Lubezki's beautiful lensing on Terrence Malick's The New World? Chivo got robbed, honestly.
