One of the biggest franchises of the 21st century is also one of the most unexpected. It's easy to forget now that 2001's The Fast and the Furious was a mid-budget sleeper hit, which told a comparatively grounded tale of LA street racers stealing TVs and DVD players off the back of trucks. Who could have predicted back then that the series would gradually metamorphose into a mega-budget globe-trotting action juggernaut?

The series really found its feet with high octane heist movie Fast 5, which set the gloriously over-the-top, logic/physics be damned approach the series has taken since. The only real missteps were the Tokyo-set third movie, which (Sung Kang's role and Vin Diesel's cameo notwithstanding) is really a sequel in name only; and the somewhat mundane fourth instalment, which may have brought the original cast back together, but lost some of the spark along the way.
