15. Very Bad Things

Years before The Hangover made an improbable amount of money and inspired two lacklustre sequels, Peter Berg made an even better, even darker film in the same vein.

At the time of its release, Very Bad Things was considered too mean-spirited and too “hollow” to really work, but that was precisely the point. The pitch black comedy is a portrait of cold-blooded arrogance and moral redundancy that spirals out of something as innocuous as a bachelor party.

The cast is incredible, including Christian Slater, Cameron Diaz, Jon Favreau and Jeremy Piven and the material deserves a second look. Had it come out 15 years later, it would have been lauded as smart, dark and funny.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
