15 Must-See Blumhouse Movies

12. The First Purge

Sinister Ethan Hawke
Universal

The First Purge is another successful installment for The Purge franchise and another highly fun mixture of B-Movie thrills and delightfully unsubtle social commentary.

Kinetic, brutally violent, thought-provoking and full of clever world-building, The First Purge might not have looked too great for the marketing but instead proved to be one of 2018's better horror films and very much a continuation of The Purge franchise's current winning streak.

As prequels go, The First Purge works very well and doesn't undermine its predecessors, which is a trap many other film prequels fall into. It also avoids becoming too ridiculous (despite some unintentionally hilarious moments), which is something both the second and third Purge films were guilty of.

Sensibly, Blumhouse are calling it a day after the upcoming fifth Purge film. However this forthcoming franchise finale turns out, the consistency of The Purge franchise, as well as how much it improved after the first film, is certainly something Blumhouse can be proud of.
