2017 was certainly a year of cinema for the ages for a number of reasons. Just take the DCEU, for example, which enjoyed the first critically and commercially successful female-led superhero movie in history, leaving even the series' own team-up film eating box office dust.

The year's biggest productions were certainly jam-packed full of fascinating stories, from alternative narratives that almost happened, wild on-set calamities, and incredible feats of production wizardry you'd never realise from watching the final product alone.

At its best, Hollywood is a dream factory, a wonderful place to escape real life for a few hours, yet whether a movie is ultimately incredible or awful, they often become so much more interesting once the beguiling nature of their production is laid completely bare.

From misguided decisions that potentially cost the studio hundreds of millions of dollars, to ingenious risks that hugely benefited the film in question, these are the must-know facts, stories and tidbits from 2017's biggest movies...

15. Nick Fury Was Originally Peter Parker's Mentor - Spider-Man: Homecoming

One of Spider-Man: Homecoming's biggest strengths was the chemistry between Peter Parker and Tony Stark, a somewhat paternal back-and-forth that lent the film a distinctly different flavour from all previous films starring the web-slinger.

However, Homecoming's director Jon Watts originally pitched the movie to Marvel Studios with Nick Fury taking the mentor role rather than Stark, yet ultimately it was agreed that Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.'s terrific scenes together in Captain America: Civil War made them a more natural fit.

Though a Fury-Parker combo sure would've been interesting, it's hard to imagine it topping the father-son patter we got in Homecoming with Tony Stark, and as such Fury's involvement likely wouldn't have had the same lightness of touch.

It sure would be nice to see Nick Fury get a substantial part in an upcoming MCU movie, though. Captain Marvel will hopefully deliver in that regard.
