15 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome

It's morphin' time.

Power Rangers
Lionsgate

Summer 2016 may have been a largely disappointing time at the movies, but there's still plenty to marvel at, what with smaller releases like Kubo and the Two Strings, Don't Breathe and Hell or High Water soaking up plenty of critical acclaim, as well as the impending Oscar season.

But what about movies that maybe aren't on your radar yet, or if they are, you've quite probably dismissed as sure-to-suck garbage? Well, the film industry is nothing if not a fickle, unpredictable beast, and we can all remember times when a movie massively overshot general expectations: 21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Edge of Tomorrow to name just a few recent ones.

These 15 movies, from what appear to be the laziest studio projects through to ambitious yet possibly misguided blockbusters, could shock us all and turn in an inconceivable amount of jaw-dropping cinematic entertainment.

Here are 15 upcoming movies that might be surprisingly awesome...

15. XXx: Return Of Xander Cage

Power Rangers
Paramount Pictures

Release Date: January 20, 2017

Why It Should Suck: It's a belated, inconceivable sequel that retcons Xander Cage's (Vin Diesel) off-screen death in the second movie now that Diesel's a megastar with the Fast and the Furious franchise, directed by the guy behind masterpieces such as Eagle Eye and I Am Number Four. Who asked for this?

Why It Might Be Awesome: That said, the trailer looks like it knows exactly what it is and should play up to the cartoonish silliness fans of Diesel expect.

Plus, it's co-written by one of the minds behind Olympus Has Fallen, which turned out to be a surprisingly fun B-movie, and the cast includes a returning Samuel L. Jackson, martial arts legend Donnie Yen as the villain, Toni Collette, Ruby Rose, Rory McCann and Tony freaking Jaa.

The trailer shows Vin Diesel riding a motorbike through the ocean, which really tells you all you need to know. It won't be the smartest film you'll see next year, but it won't take take itself one iota seriously and should deliver some inspired mayhem along the way.
