13. Johnny Depp - Alice Through The Looking Glass

Worst Performances 2016

Are Johnny Depp's days of making good movies over? After his last attempt at doing something worthwhile in Black Mass was snubbed by the Academy (an organisation whose merits Depp has openly questioned in the past) it seems likely that he will continue to don lavish costumes and prance around on camera for as long as they'll let him.

Depp's debut as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's 2010 reboot of Alice In Wonderland wasn't bad, though after Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and Sweeney Todd, Depp's pantomime act was starting to wear a bit thin. For many this year, Alice Through The Looking Glass was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The trouble with this mess of a sequel is that it overstates the cultural significance of Lewis Carroll's characters, believing that their presence in a movie is enough to make up for a threadbare plot. The Mad Hatter is a much-loved children's character, though without a decent story line to work with even Depp's patented enthusiasm seems forced.

The cast as a whole look bored and uninterested by their usual standards, though, as the captain of the Alice-reboot ship, Depp's lacking performance hits the film hardest.
