16 Movie Characters Who Were Killed For Being Clichés

16. Hartigan - Sin City

The Cliche: One day until retirement - admittedly forced retirement, but it still counts. Hartigan is pretty much a cliche on multiple fronts. Not only is he the lone moral wolf in an ocean of corruption, he's also ridiculously selfless, putting the well-being of those he protects above his own safety (which possibly explains why his face looks like it's been forced through a mangle at great speed). He also chooses to take on The Man (in this case a corrupt politician and his sexually deranged son) and has a doe-eyed young charge who idolises him. In other words, he was already going to bite the big one, even before you realise that he's just about to retire after his last case, and basically doesn't have a life to retire to. In some ways, the grissly-faced cop is pretty much the poster boy for the working class: his message is that everyone should work obediently for as long as you can, and kick and scream when anyone suggests retirement, because if you ever step out of line, or have the audacity to retire, you will definitely die.
