After a long and arduous journey through development hell, Universal finally came to Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Tevorrow around early 2013, having gone through an unfeasible number of drafts and directors. He redrafted the existing script, and set the film back by a good year with some unforeseen drastic changes.

Before that delay though, Universal had got to the early stages of casting, with Bryce Dallas Howard, David Oyelowo and Garrett Hedlund all considered for roles. Though the characters may not have been entirely the same, you have to suspect that Oyelowo could have been in the Hammond like role (he has that necessary regalness Universal seem to like, and he did the same in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes), and Hedlund was closer to Chris Pratt's hero role.

Ultimately the delay cost Universal their plans and Trevorrow and Connolly worked more on the script before casting the current team.
