20 Best Movie Moments Of 2016

From blistering battle sequences to sparkling song and dance numbers …

Arrival Amy Adams
Paramount

Like pretty much every year in cinema history, 2016 has treated us to films that run the whole gamut in terms of genre, quality and success. We’ve seen big budget superheroes flop and flail at the box office, but others pass the billion-dollar mark and have praise heaped upon them. We’ve seen impressive indies, divisive horror movies and can boast to future generations that 2016 was the year the world saw the first ever R-rated CGI animation … for whatever that’s worth. And buried within each of these films are the kind of memorable scenes – be they emotional, uplifting or terrifying – that stay with you way after the movie ends.

From blistering battle sequences and brilliantly acted, tension filled scenes to sparkling song and dance numbers and some of the most unforgettable sex scenes in recent memory, we bring to you the most memorable movie moments of the year.

20. The Neon Demon – Catwalk Debut

Arrival Amy Adams
Amazon Studios

Though Nicolas Winding Refn’s psychological horror The Neon Demon found a few fans in arthouse horror circles, a lot of people weren’t so taken with it. With scenes that include lesbian necrophilia and a gorgeous model consuming a regurgitated, cannibalised eyeball that’s perhaps not too surprising. But whether you loved it or hated it, The Neon Demon had an undeniably stylish quality to it and its catwalk scene is proof.

Featuring star Elle Fanning’s character Jesse, the catwalk scene sees her blossom (or perhaps devolve) from naïve ingénue to a full-fledged, narcissistic fashion model fully aware of the power her beauty has. It’s surreal, borderline pretentious, set to a weird Kraftwerk-esque score and crammed with enough triangular imagery to keep illuminati conspiracy theorists talking for years. But quite frankly it’s stunning.
